Colestine Pryor b. 1861 – Great Grand-daughter of Matthew Pryor?

Colestine J Pryor

Colestine J Pryor

We have another Pryor to ID! Coletine Jocelyn Pryor was born in TN in 1861. She is on the 1900 in Hardin Co., TN with her husband James Ransom Creasy. Their marriage record clearly lists her name as “Melissa”. I guess genealogy wouldn’t be as much fun if folks kept the same on all the records!

I suspect that Colestine is the same woman who was counted as a daughter of Jacob N. Pryor in Henry Co., TN in 1870 and in McNairy Co., TN  in 1880.  On these earlier census records there was a sibling named William B. Pryor and there is a William B. Pryor of about the same age living in the same Civil District as Colestine in 1900.  The daughters of Jacob Pryor were simply listed by their inital on the 1870 and 1880 census. Could Colestine J. be “C.J.”?

If Colestine is indeed the daughter of Jacob Pryor she would be a great grand daughter of Matthew Pryor of Marion Co., TN.

Photo: Parents of James Brock Pryor

Recently a new photo came to light.  I was contacted by someone who bought flea market photos and found that many of the had writing on the back that clearly identified them as Pryors. She found the TN Pryor website and has provided a copy of one of the oldest photos for Pryor researchers. The photo is identified on the back as The Parents of J. B. Pryor. Other photos ID this person as James Brock Pryor. With some reserach we now have the lineage of these Pryors.

To view photos see https://jpky-beverly.blogspot.com/2016/04/the-family-of-james-brock-pryor.html

James Brock Pryor was born in July 1844 in Graves Co., KY. He is on the 1850 through 1870 Census in Graves Co. His parents were William Pryor b. 1825 and Caroline Lockridge. Several family trees on the Ancestry website place William as a son of Jonathan Pryor and a grandson of Richard Pryor and Mourning Thompson.

The photos correspond with the census records that reveal this Pryor line’s movement from Kentucky, to Texas, and to Memphis, Tennesse.  The photo of William and Caroline Pryor was taken by Hunt photography in Mayfield, Graves County, KY. William Pryor was in Graves Co. on the 1850 and 1860 Census, by 1870 he was recorded in Hickman Co., KY, and in 1880 he was recorded near his son James B. Pryor in Grayson Co., TX.

Other photos are of Lola Allison of Mayfield, KY. The Census records indicate was a grand-daughter of William and Caroline, her mother was Lou Anna Pryor b. 1856.  Another photo is of Opie Cullins, married to  Esther a daughter of James Brock Pryor. James’ wife Nancy Margaret Pryor is in another photo taken in Memphis.

PHOTOS: Amazing Tin-Types on the Site

I received 4 more photos from the “Reed Collection”. 3 are tin-types of Pryor women from Gallatin, TN and one is of Buster Simmons, the son of Ann Eliza Pryor and a grandson of Allen L. Pryor. The tin photo were pretty dark with age, but I did my best to bring out the images with Photoshop. One of the photos is of Lucy Pryor, also a daughter of Allen L. Pryor. It helps to tie together the photos of the Pryor women already noted in the collection… they all wore am exceedingly large bead necklace in their photos! It look like the strands of giant Austrailian pearls. Read NY Times Article on Big Pearls
