To the Honourable the President and members of Council now sitting in Augusta for the purpose of granting Lands in the two new Counties of Franklin and Washington. The Petition of John Pryor from Virginia shewed. That your Petitioner is entitled to two hundred acres of Land on the headright of your petitioner as appears by affidavit annexed for which he has never had any Lands granted him this state. May it therefore please your honourable board to grant your petitioner two hundred acres of land in the county of Franklin on the right aforesaid and on his complying with the terms mentioned in the late land act and your petitioner will pray.

1799 Marriage – Allen PRYOR to Elizabeth Cole 18 Sept 1799 (this is possibly the Allen Pryor who was in Obion Co., TN in 1826?)

1808 Will of John Cole – Names his children Duke Cole, Patty Ray, John Cole, Sally Newson, Elizabeth Pryor. Four grandsons Isham Cole, Robert Cole, Matthew Cole, and William Cole. Appointed Duke Cole and George Tuggle executors of his estate. Signed 8th November 1808. Proved in court on 5th April 1822. In explanation of the delay “the original of John Cole decd which was originally proven in this court and ordered to be recorded but which it seems has never been recorded.” George Tuggle appeared as witness in 1822.

1809 Greene County Deed – 14 May 1809. Between John Pryor of said county and Johnson Porter of the same county. $570. Land on Little River and bounded by Barkers Corner, Myrecks Corner. Lydia B. Pryor was examined for release of her dower rights ib 16 May 1809. Wits: George Tuggle, Lemuel Greene, Joel Newsom. John and Lydia signed with their marks. (See Wilkes County)

1809 Court Case – George Tuggle and Duke Cole are the executors of John Cole’s estate, which includes Lucy, valued at $500, and her three children, each worth $200. The petitioners claim that in December of the previous year, they “casually lost” the slave, who fell into the possession of Allen PRYOR. They allege that although Pryor knew that the slaves were their property, he “converted the said negroes to his own use.” They sued for $2,000 in damages.

1810 Court CaseAllen PRYOR was the owner of four slaves, Lucy and her three children, Judy, Jacob and Jane. He contends, however, that the slaves were taken out of his possession and they ended up in the possession of Duke Cole “by finding.” Pryor claims that Cole intended to deceive him by not returning the slaves and that he has “converted & disposed of the said goods & Chattels to his own use.” Pryor claims damages of $1,500, and asks that Cole be required to appear in the Superior Court to answer his allegations.

October 1769 Petition, Robert PIOR stated he had lived in the province about a year. He wanted 200 acres in St. George’s parish for farming. He had a wife and one child. The land was about a quarter mile from land surveyed for Joseph De Arcy. The petition was granted. (perhaps the same family spelled Darcy, Dawsey, and Dossey) (The Colonial Records of the State of Georgia, Volume 10, pub. 1907)

1845 – Deed/Instrument. Sarah Smith was to marry Travis Guilliams, hence she deeded her property to Allen S. B. Prior. Was this a way of keeping her property in her family rather than going to her new husband or his family? Sarah Guillams (sic) is on the 1850 Census in Burke Co., GA. Travis Guillams was probably a weathly man as he owned numerous slaves per the 1850 Slave Schedules.

At a Meeting of the Inferior Court of said county, on the Petition of William PRIOR, praying the benefit of the laws of insolvency. On motion of James Smith, attorney for the applicant. It is Ordered, that all the singular, the creditors of the said Wm. Prior, be and they are hereby notified that the said Inferior Court will convene at Clinton, on the 27th day of November next. to hear the application of the said William Prior, for the benefit of the insolvent law, when upon his delivering up bona fide all his estate, for the benefit of his creditors, he will be discharged according to law, unless cause should then and there be shewn to the contrary. As witness our hands as justices of the Inferior Court of said county, this 15th day of Sept. 1817.
