1758 – Last Saturday Tho. Wright, of Sparham, Labourer, was committed to the Castle by Mr. Ellis, coroner, for wilfully and maliciously often beating and buising his own Daughter, Rose Prior, a spurious Girl of seven Years of Age, born of the Body of Sarah Prior, late of Great Witchingham in Norfolk, single-woman; of which Beating and Bruising, together with Want of sufficient sustenance, the said Rose languished at Sparham aforesiad until the 2nd of this Instant February, and then and there died. The poor Child had a great many Bruises and Marks of Violence about her from Head to Foot. These barbarous Acts are said to have been done by the Father, Thomas Wright, because she did not do so much Spinning Work as he required.
