Mrs. Rhoda Pryor of Lynchburg, VA

virginia house lynchburgRhoda Pryor, a widow, shows up on the 1910 Census in Lynchburg, VA in 1910. I looked around online to see if I could find a marriage for her to a Pryor. I now think I know who she married.

1910 Census, Lynchburg, Virginia
Rhoda A Pryor, widow, head of household, age 70, born in VA, both of her parents were born in VA. She was running a boarding house.
Percilla Diers (Perilla) widow, her sister, age 89, born in VA as well as her parents
Martha Barbour, single, another sister age 81, born in VA as well as her parents.
They had 11 boarders and one servant.

Both Rhoda and Martha are on the 1870 Census living in the household of Thomas Barbour in Elon, Amherst County, VA.

Thomas Barbour 81,
Elizabeth Barbour 68
Ann E Barbour 45
Martha Barbour 41
Rhoda Barbour 28
John H Barbour 31
Emma E Barbour 22
Elizabeth Barbour 8
Joseph C Fality  23

Rhoda Barbour Pryor died in Lynchburg, Campbell County, VA in 1917. Her brother John H. Barbour supplied the details on her death record, stating her birth as July 1836 in Amherst County, VA and that their parents were Thomas Barbour and Elizabeth Yancy and that both of the parents were born in Pittsylvania County, VA. This helps to confirm that the I located the correct Rhoda Barbour on the 1870 Census.

But which Pryor did Rhoda marry between 1870 and 1910 (when she was a widow)? Rhoda Pryor first shows up as the proprietor of the Virginia House at 1005 Main St in Lynchburg in a 1900 city directory (see parking lot above). In 1916 she was in another Lynchburg directory listed as the manager of the Pryor House at 68 1/2 9th Street (now, yet another parking lot — see below). The 1916 listing state her late husband was J N Pryor.

I suspect Rhoda married John N Pryor, son of Hartwell T Pryor of Amherst County. John was born 1833. Since I haven’t found their marriage nor have I found John N after the 1880 Census (Bedford County, VA), nor have I found Rhoda on the 1900 Census, I have to go with this as a best guess.
