William H. Pryor of Overton and Clay Counties

I was contacted by a researcher who was looking for information on William H. Pryor of Overton and Clay Counties. It’s time to look at him again.

William H Pryor was born February 1843 in Tennessee per the 1900 Census. He married Ruth (or Rutha Dial) in about 1857. His marriage date is determined by the years married noted on the 1900 Census (married 43 years in 1900).

Where was William H. Pryor on the 1850 Census? It’s suspected that he may be the “William” aged 15 who was living in the household of Jane Dial and daughter Ruth in District 10 of Overton County. There is no proof one way or the other to confirm this is William H. Pryor.

In 1850 the Pryors living near the Dials were Judy Hummel and mother Anna Pryor. Also Joseph Garrett, probably an uncle of Spicy Taylor Pryor and her siblings.

By 1860 William, his wife Ruth and her son James aged 6 were living in District 7 of Overton County, TN. They were counted near Ruth’s mother, Jane Dial, who was a weaver (Read more about Pryors who were Spinners and Weavers). If the 1900 Census is correct and that William and Ruth were married in 1857, then James was born in about 1853, before their marriage. In fact, James went by the surname “Dial” which indicates he was probably born to Ruth Dial out of wedlock.

In working with this researcher we found that there is a Civil War Pension application for William H. Pryor. The Pension App and the 1890 Veteran’s Schedule indicate the William H. Pryor served with the Tennessee Volunteers, 2nd Regiment, Co. H. Being a big Google fan I searched this regiment.
Here’s a great photo! []

Can anyone ID William H. Pryor in the photo?  Does anyone have his Civil War Pension record?

I suspect that Ruth was the daughter of James Dial of Lawrence County, TN.  This suspicion is based on her naming her first-born James and this record which possibly connects the Dial and Pryor families:

Mary Mathena Brashears, 17, b. KY, c. 1833 Lawrence Co, TN Minutes Book, 1851-1858, p. 162:¸”Nov 1, 1852.¸John Brashears has died intestate.¸Robert Newton appt. Admr.” Lawrence Co, TN Wills and Inventories, 1852-1856, p. 87:¸Dec. term 1852. Inv. and sale bill of estate of John Brashears, dec’d, Nov 20, 1852.¸Among buyers: Mary Brashears, Lawson Williams, William Inzer?, Elijah Alsup, Berry Brashears, John H. Johnston, J. M. Halcomb, D. J. White, Shadrick Chapman,J. J. Kelton, Wm. P. Halcomb, James Dial, Wm. Pryor, John Brashears.¸Robert Newton, Adm.¸The proceedings mention 400 ac. in Lewis Co. and 250 ac. in Lawrence Co.

The Pryors in Lawrence County were descended from Thompson Pryor, a son of Richard and Mourning Pryor. The Census Extracts of Lawrence County show the Pryors and Brashears mentioned above.

Add Another Line to the Richard & Mourning Pryor Tree!

It’s time to get out the No. 2 pencil and add another member to the Richard and Mourning Pryor tree. Posted on the Payton surname board at Ancestry.com was a request for info on Alfred Payton who married Sarah Pryor. I followed the researcher’s leads and found that Sarah is most likely the daughter of Walton Pryor and Mary Powell and a grand-daughter of Jeremiah Pryor.

Sarah is on the 1850 Census in Gentry Co., MO living in the household of Walton Pryor. She married Alfred Payton in Cass Co., MO in 1856. I haven’t found Walton on the 1860 Census nor have I found Alfred and Sarah, however Walton’s daughters Syntha (Cyntha) Pryor Smith and Artemesia Pryor Sigman are on the 1860 US Census in Cass County.

In 1865 Walton Pryor and  his daughters Artemesia and Sarah were counted on the Kansas State Census in Linn Co. Sarah and Alfred are on the 1870 US Census in Linn Co. and then counted on the State Census in 1875 living in Miami Co., KS.  It appears that Sarah was deceased by 1880 as Alfred had remarried and the family was living in McDonald Co., MO.

Sarah’s connection to Walton Pryor is reinforced by the naming 2 of her 6 children after her siblings: Artemesia and Jeremiah.

Sarah’s daughters, Izora and Elvira, married McGarrahbrothers and settled in Big Spring, Benton Co., AR near their Aunt Cyntha Pryor Smith Sigmon.

RICHARD & MOURNING PRYOR…I heard from Bill Lindsey, a decendant of Richard Pryor’s son Joseph.  Bill was able to provide much needed documentation of this line. Lots of updates have been added to the Richard and Mourning Pryor pages in the Pryor HISTORIES section of the website!

———————————————————————————————

Who was JOHN PRYOR born 1810 in MO?  John Pryor and wife Martha “Patsy” were on the 1860 Census in Gasconade Co. and in 1870 in Maries Co.  This line of Pryors married in to the Helton family: John’s daughter Charlotte married John Helton and possibly another daughter, Louisa Jane, married Crismon Helton.  In 1850 both Louisa Jane and Crismon Helton were single and living in the household of John J. Hughes. It’s possible that Louisa was some other kinship in that her daughter Mahala Helton married James S. Pryor, a son of John and Patsy Pryor.

ANDREW JACKSON CONNECTION? A new theme appeared this month in the search for the TN Pryors…connections to President Andrew Jackson!  Andrew Jackson was involved in negotiating the sale of land from Norton Pryor to Bedford Co., TN.  Nathaniel Pryor, member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, had served with Andrew Jackson in the 44th Infantry during the War of 1812.

STAGE COACH DRIVER’S PLAQUE… Found a website with photo of a 1931 bronze plaque dedicated to stage coach drivers. Named on the list of drivers was an Alfred L. Pryor.  Any ideas which line of Pryors this Alfred is kin to?  http://gesswhoto.com/shasta.html

Glen Pryor is searching for the parents of MATTHEW J. PRYOR, the patriarch of the Marion County, TN Pryors. Does anyone have any source documentation of this line? The second-hand accounts are proving to be flawed.  Glen reports that the book “21 Southern Families” states that Matthew Pryor was the son of Green Pryor, but offers no source information.  Genealogies in Ancestry.com report that Green Pryor was born 1745 which would make him too young to be the father of Matthew born in 1759. Any ideas that will help solve this line?
