Felix Gilbert vs Richard Pryor and Friend to Haden Pryor?

Posted on by

felix 2Sometimes a name pops up and it seems to connect a family. This time the name is Felix Gilbert. I think he was part of the same group of aligned families who settled the most rural parts of colonial Virginia.

Gentry And Common Folk: Political Culture on a Virginia Frontier, 1740-1789, by Albert H. Tillson (pub. 1991) describes Felix Gilbert as “an Augusta merchant and justice of the peace.” With an association to William Preston.  There’s a nifty map online that shows the proximity of Gilbert and Preston’s property in Albemarle Co., VA  (view map)

I first spotted Felix Gilbert mentioned with a Pryor on an 1757 record for military pay in connection to the French-Indian War – AUG. 12 1757  John Pryor. Receipt to William Preston for 3 11s. being in full of his pay. Witnessed by Felix Gilbert.  Howdy, neighbor! There’s William Preston again.

About a decade later Gilbert is paired with another Pryor: Felix Gilbert vs. Richard Pryor. Elizabeth Pryor Harper in Twenty-One Sourthern Families found this suit in Chalkley’s Chronicles with an abstract reference to this case in Augusta County Court judgments for Aug. 1765, Bk. B, noting that Richard Pryor had not been found, and lived on the Roanoke (Chalkley, vol. 1, p. 333). This says writ was issued 28 March 1765.

He moved from VA to NC. In 1785 Felix Gilbert was named on the estate of Stephen Shifflett in Orange Co.  Matthew J Pryor married in Orange Co. and it should be noted that his brother Haden Pryor (of Granville Co., NC) and Elizabeth Wade – named a son Felix G Pryor in the 1770’s. Was he Fexlix Gilbert Pryor?

And then Felix Gilbert pops up again. He signed a petition in 1799 in Knox County (see signers). Another signer was William Pryor who I believe is from Bedford County, VA.

I don’t like to throw around loose theories… so I’m going to keep Felix on the back burner. I have a feeling he’ll be a clue later on.

Connecting Daniel Farley to the Pryors

Virginia and U.S. Flag, Yorktown, Virginia (VA)

Here’s a case for Pryors descended from the Goochland County, VA line of Samuel Pryor and his wife Prudence Thornton!

Samuel Pryor vs William Pryor, et al
Filed in Chancery Court of Louisa County

A 1799 Summons for not answering a bill of complaint exhibited against him in the county court of Louisa by Samuel Pryor, son of Samuel, John A Pryor, Daniel Farley and Patsey his wife by order of the court.

A copy of the summons was left for Samuel Pryor on the 8th day of May 1799. William Pryor is no inhabitant.

The Commonwealth of Virginia to the sheriff of Louisa County greeting we command you that you attach Samuel Pryor executor of William Pryor dec’d who was administrator of Samuel Pryor deceased if he be found within your balliwick and have save by keep so that you have his body before the justices of our county court of Louisa at the court house. (for Oct 17, 1799)

Col William Pryor who was married to Sarah Wood, was deceased by the time of this suit and he had been the executor of his father Samuel Pryor’s estate. Col. William’s own son named Samuel was his executor and he was also deceased. The suit notes that this younger Samuel Pryor’s children were John A Pryor, Martha Patsy Pryor married to Daniel Farley, and Samuel Pryor.

The youner Samuel Pryor was in Henry Co., KY by 1800. Perhaps he was already in KY by 1799, explaining why he could not be served in Louisa County. John A. Pryor was in KY by 1799 as his son Daniel Farley Pryor was recorded as born in KY in July 1799 in a family Bible.

Daniel Farley must  have been a beloved or well-respected family member after marrying Patsey (or Martha) Pryor. His brother-in-law John A Pryor named his youngest son Daniel Farley Pryor.

Pryor – Bunch (or Punch) Connection to President Obama’s Line?

On CBS Morning Show they ran a story this morning on  how President Obama is descended from an African slave named John Punch through his mother’s Virginia family.  Obama is connected to the Pryors, now I’m wondering if the Pryors are connected to the Bunch line.

Pryor researchers who follow our Facebook Page probably saw that I posted a link to the President’s lineage back in April. http://familypedia.wikia.com/wiki/Ancestors_of_Barack_Obama. Barack Obama has a family lineage that traces back to the Childres/Childress family who married into Pryor families in Colonial Virginia; his 6th great grandparents were Robert Childers/Childress and Nancy Pryor. Robert was a son of Henry Childress born about 1730 in Albemarle Co., VA.

An article about Obama’s connection to the Bunch line also appeared in the NY Times this morning http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/30/us/obamas-mother-had-african-forebear-study-suggests.html?pagewanted=all. Bunch or Punch are not names that I’ve seen connected with the Pryors, so I had to Google to see what I could find, afterall they were all in roughly the same area of Virginia. In case anyone is interested in researching further, I found Thomas Bunch born 1763 in Louisa Co., VA was the father of Pryor Bunch. Perhaps there’s a Pryor connection in this line?
