Jesse Pryor of Knox County– Is He the Jesse Pryor in Overton County?

juda-pryorWow, the TN Tax Lists are INTERESTING! In 1804 there was a Jesse Pryor on the Knox County Tax list. I can’t tell much about him — he had one pole and no acres recorded. There was also a Samuel Pryor in Knox County with the same status. They were both in Captain Steel’s Company that consisted of 66 taxpayers.

I wondered in print (Harris Pryor of Knox Co., TN and Bedford Co., VA) if Jesse Pryor of Knox County was the same Jesse Pryor who went to Overton County, TN.  Myself and other researchers have long speculated that Jesse was the father of Juda Pryor who married William Huston Hummel (Juda is on the 1850 Census with an older Anna Pryor who may be her mother). When Juda’s son John McDonald Hummel died in 1915 his mother was reported as “Julie Pryor” born in “East Tenn.” How about that… Knox County is in East Tennessee.

If Jesse is the of Harris Pryor of Bedford County, then I suspect Samuel is related to this line. They seem to stick with each other through the records. This is the point to pour your second cup of coffee before we jump into the puzzle.

Yes, the pieces of the puzzle start to stack up to complete the picture that Jesse and Samuel were related.

  • Samuel and Jesse were on the 1804 Tax List in Knox County – Both living in Captain Steel’s Company.
  • The administratrix of Samuel Pryor’s estate was Fanny Ferguson Pryor and a later Roane County court case ID’s Samuel Pryor as the grandfather of P. Miller Freels. There was a John Foggueson (sic) also in Captain Steel’s Company on the 1804 Knox County Tax List.  John Ferguson may have been Fanny’s brother as there is a John Ferguson, deceased, named on a 1839 Cumberland County Chancery Court suit that also names Fanny Pryor and her children.
  • Jesse Pryor is spectulated to be the father of Juda Pryor Hummel of Overton County whose son’s death record states she was born in East Tennessee.
  •  Samuel Pryor died in Anderson County, TN in about 1815 (that’s when Fanny was appointed administratrix). There’s a Jesse Pryor on the 1805 Tax List for Anderson County. Jesse was recorded as #119. I found #85 Isaac Freels, #96 Burrell Hudson, #157 and #158 were Edward and Thomas Freels, #191 John Rector–a daughter of Samuel and Fanny Pryor married Edward Freels around 1813 or earlier. Another daughter, Mary, married Barry Hudson. John Rector was recorded near Fanny Pryor and her son Harris Pryor on the 1830 census in Roane County.
  • Jesse Pryor, son of Harris Pryor and Mary Kinnerson was from Bedford Co., VA. Juda Pryor Hummel stated her parent’s place of birth as VA on the 1880 Census.
  • The Jesse Pryor on the 1830 Census in Overton Co., TN was born between 1771-1780. Samuel’s wife is on the 1830 Census in Roane Co., TN and was also born between 1771-17780, so perhaps Samuel was also born about the same time, which would make Samuel and Jesse contemporaries.
  • I believe sons of Harris Pryor of Bedford County, VA came to Knox County at the end of the 1790’s. In 1799 William Pryor (Harris’ oldest son) signed a petition for tax relief for an impaired neighbor (Richard Shields). In 1801 Harris Jr. (he didn’t use Jr on documents – I’m just using it to distinguish him from his father) was on the deliquent tax list for Knox County. In 1801 Jesse Pryor was a defendant in a crime.
  • Samuel is not mentioned in any Bedford County, VA records so, I don’t yet see how he’s related, though he lived around Harris’ family in TN and named his son Harris.

Happy to hear from anyone who wants to contribute to this theory with a pro or con!

Harris Pryor of Roane County Revisited

Log Cabin

I apologise if I’m not always speedy in answering my Pryor emails and comments on the website. I received a comment that relates to the post Harris Pryor and Roane County, TN Pryors (January 11, 2011).  It’s time to take another look at the Pryors in Roane and Anderson Counties and to assess their relationships.

The writer is looking for the mother of Pleasant Miller Freels. Turns out that Pleasant is the grandson of Samuel Pryor whose estate was administered in 1815 in Anderson County, TN.  At the time of the estate Frances Pryor posted bond and Edward Freels was security.  The researcher provided reference to an 1846 Roane County court case that involved Pleasant M. Freels and Harris Pryor, referring to Pleasant as Samuel Pryor’s grandson.

I’ve added census extractions that include Pleasant Miller Freels to the TN Pryor website (Anderson County and Roane County).

The same writer also referred to a 1927 article about Harris Pryor (read more in “A Fishing Trip”). It discusses four children that the single Harris Pryor cared for: Jane (Lockett), Fanny (Hudson), Bill Lockett, and Pleasant Freels.  Harris Pryor’s 1847 will states that Jane Pryor Lockett and Frances “Fanny” Pryor Hudson were Harris’ nieces.  Harris’ mother Frances Pryor pre-deceased him.  In her 1846 will she refers to her son Harris Pryor, so it’s likely that she is the grandmother of Jane and Fanny.

When Samuel Pryor died in 1815, Fanny Pryor was the estate administrator and then in 1827 Fanny, William Pryor along with Harris Pryor posted additional bond.  It’s possible that this is the same William Pryor who was named on several land deeds in Roane County. William’s first deed was in 1808 on Poplar Creek. He was named in deeds as late as 1817 mentioning land on Poplar Creek.  When Fanny died in 1846, her will states her land was on Poplar Creek.  It’s likely that Harris Pryor was living on his mother’s land when he was counted on the 1830 census– there’s an older female in his household who is probably Fanny and he was counted near John Rector and Rector is named with William Pryor in a 1811 Roane County deed.

The real “AH HA!” moment was in the Chancery Court Records

1839 Chancery Court Case
Filed about 1839 in Cumberland County, VA
Executor of Robert M Bondurant v
Executor of Robert Ferguson, et al
————————————————
Page 61 – Robert Ferguson has also departed this life having first duly published his last will and testament of which Jno W. Wilson of the County of Cumberland is executor – that by the said will Nancy Ferguson of said County the widow of said. Robert and Boler Blackburn and Lucy his wife, formerly Lucy Ferguson —– Stone and Elizabeth his wife formerly Ferguson (and which said Lucy and Elizabeth are the only children and heirs of John Ferguson deceased), Frances Pryor, Alcey Lockett, Berry Hudson and Polly his wife, Harris Pryor and William Pryor which said Alcey, Polly, Harris and William are children of the said Frances Pryor), Lucy Reynolds, Robert Reynolds, Thomas Reynolds, William Roberts and Mary his wife, formerly Mary Reynolds, harry Ames and Ellizabeth his wife, Samuel Hughes and Fanny his wife and Seymore Reynolds (the said Robert, Thomas, Mary, Elizabeth, Fanny and Seymour, are children of the said Lucy Reynolds) are entitled to that portion of the said 192 acres of land which the said testator Robert Ferguson bought as aforesaid of the said Thomas B. Randolph.

I now suspect Samuel and Fanny’s family to look something like this

Fanny (Ferguson?) Pryor born 1771-1780, married to Samuel Pryor
children:
Harris
Pryor born 1801-1810, d. 1846 (Fanny’s will state’s he was her son), he never married.
William Pryor born 1801-1810 He’s on the 1830 Census in Anderson Co., TN.
Ailsey (Alice?) Pryor Lockett b. 1800, mother of Jane Lockett, possibly also the mother of Bill Lockett. Married to Benjamin Lockett.
Mary “Polly” Pryor Hudson born 1801-1810, d. about 1837, mother of Fanny Hudson, married to Berry Hudson.
Mr Pryor married to Rebecca born 1801-1810,  Rebecca is on the 1830 & 1840 Census in Anderson Co., TN.
Miss Pryor married to Edward Freels, mother of Pleasant Miller Freels

Pryor And Rector Family Virginia Connections

Posted on by

I remarked in an earlier post that I was leaving the Rectors for another day.  Well, today’s the day.

The Rectors were German immigrants that settled in colonial Virginia. Though my research and the research of others, we have turned over numerous connections to the Pryors in Virginia and later in Tennessee.

My own Pryor line is descended from John Pryor and Massie Taylor who were married in Campbell Co., VA in 1812 and settled in Sumner Co., TN. Massie’s sister Spicy Taylor married a William Pryor in 1809 and settled in Overton Co., TN.  John and William Pryor are probably brothers, sons of an older John Pryor from VA (I’ll refer to him as John Sr. throughout the rest of this post).

John Sr. AND a Rector were first documented together in 1790..

On 15 March 1790, John PRYER witnessed the following deed “from Murrell CUNNINGHAM of Campbell to William BURNETT of Campbell, for 30,000 weight of nett, inspected tobacco, 1 Negro woman, Fanny, and 9 children viz. Sam, London, Lymas, Agness, Betty, Charlotte, David, Coye, and William. Signed – Murrell CUNNINGHAM. Wit – John PRYER, Charles RORK,  Martin RECTOR (X his mark) . This bill of sale was recorded Apr 1, 1790.” (Campbell County Virginia Deeds, 1784 – 1790 published by T.L.C. Genealogy (Miami), p. 72, referencing deed book page 474)

The following year Martin Rector appears on another document.  Edward Deckey, believed to be Edward Dickey is also a signer. Edward Dickey was the father of Sally Dickey, the first wife of Hezekiah Taylor,  a brother in law of both John and William Pryor (Hezekiah was Massie and Spicy Taylor’s  brother.

Petition dated August 1, 1791 Connected Campbell Co. Signers:
John DECKEY, Edward DECKEY, Wrenny CREWS,
Martin RECTOR, Thomas OGLESBY, Murrell CUNNNINGHAM.

I suspect it was John Sr. who witnessed Jacob Rector’s will in 1779.  John’s known children were William born 1761-1770, John born 1780-1789, and probably Elizabeth Pryor Harris born about 1780.  The ages of his children help to determine that John Sr. was an adult and alive at the time of Jacob Rector’s will.

John PRYER with Gideon MARTIN, Jane PRESTON, Thomas STOVALL witnessed the will of Jacob RECTOR in Bedford County VA on 26 Oct. 1779. John Pryer along with Gideon Martin proved the will by oaths on 22 Nov. 1779. John Pryer along with David Martin and Thomas Stovall inventoried the estate of Jacob Rector on 3 Dec. 1779, returned 22 January 1781. “Prier” also used at one place in the record. (Abstracts of Bedford County Virginia Wills, Inventories and Accounts by Joida Whitten, Taylor Publishing Company (Dallas), pp. 101 and 113, referencing will book pp. 359-60 and 387.)

Another connection that helps to place John Sr. and Martin Rector in the same community: their minister, William Flowers.

Martin RECTOR and Sarah MARTIN, bond 20 December 1804. Consent David Martin, father of the bride. Martin Rector (b) and David Martin (b); David Martin Jr. (w) and James Martin (w). M. R. 25 December 1804 by William Flowers. Marriages of Campbell County, Virginia, 1782-1810 By Lucy Harrison Miller Baber, Hazel Letts Williamson.

If you search the records of Fentress and Overton County, you’ll see Flowers families who migrated to Tennessee from Virginia. William Flowers of Campbell County performed not only the marriage of Martin Rector—he also married Elizabeth Pryor to John Harris in 1800,  and another Hezekiah Taylor from Campbell Co., VA who married Polly Oglesby in 1807 (this Hezekiah died in Canada during the War of 1812).

The Pryor and Rector connections continue in Roane and Anderson Counties, Tennessee.

William PRYER, S#362 2-1-1811, E#812 1-21-1811. 5 acres on Piles Turnpike  Road on Rocky Branch of Little Emerys River . SCC: Reuben Williams, John RECTOR. Recorded 2-22-1811. Lifted 1-22-1812 by William PRYOR. Ansearchin’ News, East Tennessee Surveys, 1807-1813, Roane County.

On the 1830 Census there there’s a Rector living near Harris PRYOR; John RECTOR is enumerated on the line below Harris.
Martin Rector’s estate is described in this case in Roane Co., TN, revealing the names of his heirs.  Martin Rector. No Pryors mentioned.

The most confounding connections are the Pryors and Rectors who appear out side of  Roane, Anderson, and Morgan Counties in Tennessee.

– John Pryor b. 1833, son of James and Nancy Pryor in Overton Co. married a Kitty Rector.
– John T. Pryor b. 1788 in KY is mentioned with “T” Rector in a 1823 Gasconade Co., MO will.
– Philip Pryor b. 1791 in NC (son of Matthew Pryor Sr.)  married a Miss Reeter. Since there were no Reeters in TN, it’s speculated she was a Rector.

Harris Pryor and Roane County, TN Pryors

Thanks to Nova for starting a conversation on the Harris Pryors in Tennessee.  There were 2 living fairly near eachother in the early 1800’s but we’ve been looking at the younger one who was in Roane County.

On the 1830 Census in Roane Co., TN there was Harris Pryor age 20 to 29 years old. Also in his household was a female of the same approximate age and an older woman who was 50 to 59 years (born 1771-1780, possibly his mother or mother in law). Recorded one line below Harris is a man named John Rector. I suspect there’s a connection but I’m going to have to leave that for another longer and more convoluted blog post.

In 1840 both Harris’ Pryors were still heads of households. The younger Harris in Roane Co. was age 30 to 39 years, living alone. Recorded on the lines immediately following this Harris were Thomas and Barry Hudson whose names will become more relevant as I explain relationships further in the paragraphs that follow.

Through a Google search I located a book titled “Hudson Ancestors My Father Never Knew” by Malcom H Hudson.  It states: “As stated earlier, Thomas HUDSON lived in Anderson Co. in 1830, and he continued to own land in Anderson Co. even after he moved across the line into Roane Co., Tenn., shortly before 1840. His neighbor Francis PRYOR, wrote a last will 8-3-1844 and appointed ‘my friend Thomas HUDSON’ as executor. The will also gave his son Harris PRIOR (Prier) 150 acres in Roane Co. ‘on the waters of Poplar Creek…’ ”

This information appears to be somewhat incorrect. Nova found the will of Frances (a woman, not Francis a male) in Roane County:

Roane Co., TN, Will Book A, pp. 228-229:

FRANCES PRIOR July Term 1846

Named son Harras Prier whom she gave 150 acres in Roan Co. on the waters of Poplar Creek adjoining the lands of Thomas Hudson, James Davis and others. Named grandson George Hudson the  remaining interest in the above named tract of land of 150 acres for his only use and benefit. To son Harras Prier my negro man named Sia (Cy?) Nominated my friend Thomas Hudson executor of this my last will and testament. Dated 3 Aug 1844. Signed by Frances “her X mark” Prier

Witnessed by Wm. C. Griffith, Charles W. Parker, and Richard G. Hudson.

Produced in open court on 6 July 1846.

Nova also dug up another record in Anderson County that again confirms that Frances was the mother, not the father of Harris Pryor:

Samuel PRIOR, Died before 10 July 1815 when Fanny Prior made bond as administrix with Benjn. Procket (Lockett?) and Edward Freele (Freels?) as security.  (Anderson Co., TN, Co Ct Min 2/39)  On 9 April 1827 Francis Prior, administrix for the estate of Samuel Prior deceased, gave additional bond with Ben. Locket, Wm. Prior, Edward Freele [Frule], Farris Prior (presumably this is Harris Pryor) & Berry Hudson as security (ibid 4/75).

This record doesn’t positively identify Samuel as the husband of Frances, or Fanny, Pryor, however it opens the door to further research to confirm the relationship between Samuel and Frances.

Again in the book “Hudson Ancestors My Father Never New” an excerpt says “Robert FERGUSON of Cumberland County, VA whose daughter Frances Ferguson m. Francis PRYOR and moved to Roane Co., Tenn., where Berry ‘ HUDSON m. “Polly” PRYOR, daughter of Frances (FERGUSON) PRYOR.” I’m not convinced there was a man named Francis Pryor, however this may be a clue to the identity of Frances’ maiden name. It also may have a clue to the origin of this line of Pryors: Cumberland Co., VA.

Although Harris Pryor was not yet 40 years old in 1840, he apparently didn’t outlive his mother by very long. Nova also uncovered Harris’ 1847 will:

Roane Co., TN, Will Book E, pp. 28-29:

HARRIS PRYOR July Term 1847

[His name was spelled as Harris Prior in the record.]

Will was produced in court during July Term 1847 of Harris Prior deceased by William Lockett and William Davis, witnesses. Requested that my negro man Sye (Cy?) shall be emancipated and set at liberty as a free man at my death and to give him of my property one horse worth $40 and one plough and gears. To my two nieces Jane Lockett and Frances Hudson all the balance of my property and moneys to be equally divided between them. To the above two nieces all my lands to have and to hold.

Appointed William C. Headrick my Executor.

Signed 3 June 1846.  Witnessed by William Lockett and William Davis

Signed Harris “his X mark” Prior

We can surmise from the will that Harris died without a wife of children. However, that doesn’t mean that he died without heirs. I looked thought the 1850 Census to see if I could identify George Hudson (Frances’ grandson) or Jane Lockett or Frances Hudson who were nieces of Harris Pryor. I wasn’t able to find George Hudson, Jane is living in the household of William Lockett, and there’s a Fanny Hudson living with Benjamin Hudson, who may be Berry Hudson.

Once again the book “Hudson Ancestors My Father Never New” gives another clue to the identities of the children of Frances Pryor: Harris, Mary or Polly who married Berry Hudson (possibly the mother of George and Frances Hudson), and Thomas Pryor (was this the Thomas who was in Wilson Co., TN?).

Nova found further evidence of these Pryors connection to Cumberland Co., VA.  It appears that Harris had property or something of an estate there and it was inventoried after his death.

p. 228: HARRIS PRIOR July Term 1850. Inventory of the estate of Harris Prior dec’d in Cumberland county state of Virginia, 27 May 1850. Received of the Executor of Robert Fergensand (Ferguson?) dec’d.  Received of the adm’r of Francis Prior dec’d.  Signed 1 July 1850 by Wm. Ellis adm’r.

Do you know anything about this Pryor line or their connection to the older Harris Pryor who lived in Knox County? Please share!

Austin L. Green and Emily Pryor of Roane Co., TN

Ancestry.com has put up a database of Tennessee Marriages: “Tennessee State Marriages, 1765-2002”.  What I like about this database is that there are actual images of marriage licenses and registers. It gives a unique online opportunity to look at the handwriting and solve a few family history mysteries.

A new database wouldn’t be any fun unless it has a few Pryors in it… and it does!

In 1850 Emily Pryor married Austin L. Green in Roan Co., TN.  They are on the 1850 through 1900 Census in Roane County (extractions are now on the TN Pryor website). They were married in January, so probably Emily is not the mother of the 5 children in the household at the time of the 1850 Census.  In 1860 5 additional children were counted in the family. In 1880 and 1900 Emily reported her parents were born in VA and TN.

Was Emily a widow of a Pryor or was she born a Pryor?
