Leroy B. Pryor: Part I – What We Know

Leroy B. Pryor who was living in Jackson County, Tennessee at the time of the 1850 Census was married, age 23 and had at least 2 children living in his household. The number of children is actually uncertain because of a pencil mark made by the census taker. Either Leroy had a son David age 4 or an older relative David Pryor aged 24 was living in the household.

Assuming that Leroy’s parents were about 20 years old when he was born in 1827, they would have been born in about 1798-1807. The 1880 Census in Phelps Co., MO recorded Leroy’s parents as both born in North Carolina. In 1830 there were no Pryors counted in Jackson County. In 1840 there was a “Cinda” Pryor whose household included two males of age 15 and less than 20; one female of age 10 and less than 15; one female of age 20 and less than 30; and one female of age 30 and less than age 40. Leroy’s year of birth makes him a likely fit in this household.

A possible sibling is Jane Pryor b. 1827, married to Robert N. Allen, is also a likely fit in Cinda’s household. Both Leroy and Jane Pryor Allen were living in District 9 at the time of the 1850 Census, near families of the same surnames that were counted near Cinda Pryor in 1840. Jane’s death record names her mother as “Linda Pryer.”

Naming traditions may also be a clue to Leroy’s kinship. Leroy’s first daughter was named Melinda Jane. Perhaps after his mother? The box below shows the names of Leroy’s children and next to it the traditional naming practice.

Leroy & Elizabeth’s children:

Sons
1st son = John (father’s father)
2nd son = William S. (mother’s father)
3rd son = Leroy (father)
4th son = George W.(father’s oldest brother)
5th son = James or Joseph (father’s 2nd oldest brother or mother’s oldest brother)Daughters
1stDau = Melinda Jane (mother’s mother)
2ndDau = Rebecca (father’s mother )
3rdDau = Sarah Ann (mother)
4thDau = Parisetta (mother’s oldest sister)

Melody Pryor who has been researching her ancestor Leroy B. is confident, although searching for proof, that Elizabeth Mayberry Pryor’s parents are Seth and Rebecca. “I don’t know what the middle initial “S.” stands for in “William S.” but I am assuming it may stand for “Seth”. I am also assuming that Leroy & Elizabeth reversed the mother’s names, that is, the 1st daughter was named after Leroy’s mother and the 2nd daughter was named after Elizabeth’s mother. Using this logic, then Leroy’s parents would be John Pryor and Melinda (or Jane).”

So the question is whether Linda and Cinda Pryor are the same person.

Leroy’s vitals statistics changed between records: In 1850 he was born in 1827 and on his Missouri death certificate he was 62 when he died in 1885 making him born in 1823. Melody obtained Leroy’s Civil War records. He’s described as six foot with brown hair and blue eyes. He served in the 63rd Reg’t E. M. M. and 70th Reg’t E. M. M.

Melody’s research paints a larger picture of Leroy Pryor as a pioneer farmer. In November 1870 he completed the requirements of the Homestead Act. He had been on his land in Phelps County since October 1865. He had made improvements: built two houses that were 16′ x 16′ (that’s 256 sq. feet each!); ploughed, fenced and cultivated about 30 acres; and he had built a stable and a corn crib. The Homestead paperwork and the 1870 Non Populated Census for the Production of Agriculture indicate Leroy had a peach and apple orchard, and was also growing winter wheat, Indian corn, Irish potatoes, and oats. He also had a small number of livestock consisting of cattle, milking cows, horses, sheep and pigs.

John Pryor and Rebecca Cook: Connection to Other Pryors?

I’ve heard from a researcher who is working on the line of William Pryor who married Mahala Lewis in Montgomery Co., AR.  William is probably William Henry Pryor who was born in 1829 in TN, the same man who served in Co. H. , 1 (Colquitt’s Arkansas Infantry) during the Civil War.  It’s suspected that he’s the Henry Pryor who was working as a farm hand in Wilson Co., TN in the Ricketts household at the time of the 1850 Census.

Some researchers have included Henry William Pryor as a son of John Pryor and wife Rebecca Cook.

So which line of Pryors is this John Pryor from?  He was married in Rutherford Co., TN in 1823.  There’s an Allen Pryor on the 1820 Census in Rutherford Co. John and Rebecca were on the 1830 and 1840 Census in Wilson Co., TN. From these census entries we can surmise that John was born between 1800 and 1810. By 1850 John was probably deceased, his wife and several children were in Chistian Co., KY.

I’m now wondering if John Pryor is the connection to link up some of the “straggling” Pryors in the census records. There’s the Allen Pryor in Rutherford Co. 1820, then an Allen Pryor on the 1830 and 1840 Jackson Co. census. We know the Allen born in 1810 in SC and living Jackson Co. in 1850 is related to the Thomas Pryor born 1813/1814 in TN who was living in Wilson Co., TN in 1850. Are John, Allen (and Alfred in Jackson Co.), and Thomas related? How?

MORE ON THE JACKSON COUNTY TN PRYORS… Over the past months it was discovered that Sinderilla Pryor (wife of Allen Pryor b. 1810 in SC) was on the 1860 Census in Jackson County. The probability arose that Cinderella Prior on the 1870 Census in Franklin Co., IL was the same person. I recently obtained two death certificates from Illinois to try to confirm the identity of the Pryors in Franklin Co. And they do!

While working on the Pryors I weighed whether Alfred Pryor who was on the 1850 Census with Allen and Sinderilla was the same person who appeared on Franklin Co., IL census record through 1920. His age differs wildly on the census records. In 1850 he was 5, in 1860 he was 14, age 16 in 1870, 23 in 1880, twenty years later in 1900 his age was recorded as 51, aged 56 in 1910, and aged 70 in 1920. The death certificate of Alfred Pryor states he was about 75 years old in 1921 (born about 1846 which would be close to his birth year on the 1850 census), although his date of birth wasn’t known. The certificate also confirms that his father was Allen Pryor of Tennessee.

Summaries of the death records are now on the TN Pryor website:

This month all roads seem to converge on the Jackson County Pryors… but not without detours through Illinois and Williamson County, TN! A Pryor researcher contacted the website to report a link to Transcripts of court records for the probate of Luke Pryor’s will in 1848 and his sister Sarah Pryor McPhail’s will in 1851. (As of December 2019 link is no longer available)

The transcripts are interesting because they mention Rhoda Ann Pryor and her sister Polly (Mary) Ann Pryor who were living with a William Pryor in Jackson Co., TN. Both of these women are daughters of Henry B. Pryor (great grand-daughters of Luke Pryor).

Which raises the question: Are Rhoda and Mary, their guardian William, Allen and Alfred Pryor of Jackson County, and the line of Luke Pryor of Williamson Co., TN related?

3 MORE PRYORS…added to the TN PRYOR Project: John, Manerva, and Sarah Pryor possibly children of Elizabeth Pryor on the 1850 Census in Jackson Co., TN. This family was living with Thomas Porter and family in 1850. There is a message dated 11/15/1998 on the Genealogy.com message board: searching for a John Franklin Pryor born in 1846 in Jackson Co., TN. Does anyone know if the John in Jackson Co., TN in 1850 is the John Pryor in Weakley Co., TN in 1860? Is he the  John Pryor in Meramec, St. Louis Co., MO in 1880?

CINDERELLA FOUND! I keep researching the census and other records, however I’m convinced at this point that Cinderella PRIOR who is on the 1870 of Franklin County, IL is the same person who was the wife of Allen Pryor or Jackson Co., TN. I believe that Alfred Pryor who was also recorded in Franklin. Alfred is of interest because he was living with Josephine PRYOR Purcell in 1920 as was described as her “uncle”. Josephine is the daughter of Thomas and Tabitha Pryor of Wilson Co., TN, so this census record appears to connect the lines of Allen Pryor of Jackson Co., TN to Thomas Pryor of Wilson Co., TN.

FAMOUS PRYORS…Did you know that Civil War General Roger Atkinson Pryor (1828-1919) is buried in the North? General Pryor is buried at Princeton Cemetery in Princeton, NJ. Also buried in this cemetery are Aaron Burr, President Grover Cleveland, Jose and Kitty Menendez (parents of the infamous California Menendez brothers), and John Witherspoon a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

I have heard from some new researchers who have shed light on the TN PRYORS…

A decendant of John Clark Pryor born 1841 in Kingsport, TN. John was the son of Thomas D. Pryor and wife Margaret Clark. He lived in TN and later Iowa and California. This researcher has been told that John Clark Pryor was the grandson of John Sackett Pryor and Mary Jockey. Is anyone aware of this family line? Read Bio in Pryor Histories

Another researcher is looking for ancestry of William Pryor of Rhea County. Searching the census records, we found the Rhea County Pryors are related to Harmon Pryor of Marion County and Sequatchie County, TN. Read Bio in Pryor Histories.

Does anyone know how to interpret the cemetery records on Ancestry.com? The book/source information is not present in direct context with the data. I found “William T. Pryor, Revolutionary Soldier, Virginia”. I’d like to clarify where his grave was found. Is it in the Cleveland Family Cemetery in Philadelphia, TN?

FOUND! Jackson Co., TN Pryors… Remarkably another Pryor family has been found on the 1860 Census. Sindarilla Pryor, widow of Allen Pryor from SC appears on the 1850 Census. She has now been found in District 13 of Jackson Co. with several of her children. If you try to find her in Ancestry.com… watch out! She’s indexed as Lindanter Pasc. No wonder it’s so hard to find our kin!
