Samuel Pryor of Montgomery County, TN Also in Mercer County, KY

I’m not sure Samuel Pryor actual lived in Mercer County, KY or if he was just transacting business there.

Samuel Pryor of Montgomery County, TN, Christian County, KY, and Hardeman County, TN was married to Frances Hooe. Samuel and his brother in law Thomas B. Hooe are named an instrument filed in Mercer County in 1820 (DB 11: 284)

“…bonds was taken by the Sheriff of Mercer County by Virtue of an execution issued from the office of the Mercer Circuit court in the name of Ezekiel Barber assignee against the Estate of said Saml Pryor and which rep9?)n bond is dated the 12th day of November 1819 and is for the total amount of Four hundred and forty eight dollars ten cents payable…”

“…the second which —-? bonds was taken by the said Sheriff by virtue of an execution issued from the same office in the name of Jesse Head against the Estate of the said Saml Pryor and is dated on the said 12th day of november Eighteen hundred & nineteen and is for the total amount of one hundred & three dollars thirty one & one half cent payable with in three months from the date thereof which Interest…”

“…The third of which rep(?)y Bonds was taken by the said Sheriff by virture of an execution (—?) from the said office in the name of David Epperson assignee against the estate of the said Saml Pryor and is dated on the said twelfth day of November Eighteen hundred & nineteen and is for the total amount of Two hundred & sixty eight dollars thirty Eight & half cent payable with Interest thereon within three months from the date there of…”

“…Pryor paid by the said Waugh & Hooe the receipt where of is here by acknowledged hath bargained & sold and by these presents doth Bargain & sell unto them the said Geo L. Waugh and Thomas B. Hooe the heirs & the following described property {to wit} Sam a negro man Slave aged about Twenty five years by profession a Blacksmith, Anthony a negro boy slave twelve years of age and Billy a negro man slave aged about forty years and also a certain Bay stud horse with a blazed face called Tanner. All which Slaves & which horse are now the property of him the said Pryor …”

Frances Hooe wife of Samuel Pryor of Clarksville, TN

The answer to the identity of Frances Ann the wife of Samuel Pryor of Clarksville is in the obit for their son Bernard H. Pryor.

I’ve seen countless family trees that speculate on a mother’s maiden name by picking out a child’s middle name and concluding that it’s the name of a near relative or the mother’s maiden name. I think I have evidence that Hooe is Frances’ maiden name.

A suit was filed by Samuel Pryor and wife, etc against the guardians of Eliza Hooe. An Interlocutory Degree was recorded in May 1816 distributing slaves named Lewis, Janetty, Helen, Phillie, and Anthony to Samuel and his wife.

To the worshipful the justices of King George County and sitting in Chancery
Humbly complaining shewith unto your worships your orators and oratrixes Fany Hooe who intermarried with Samuel Pryor, Harriet Hooe who intermarried with Gwyn Page, Ann Hooe, and Thomas B Hooe that your orators and oratrixes are heirs and distributees of Wm Hooe lately of King George county deceased and as such are entitled together to — their mother Susan the widow and relict of said William Hooe decd to their full and equal shall share and alike to about —- nine negroes males and females old and young lately belonging to then said William Hooe decd and for their natural benefit and advantage are — that the aforesaid negroes should be equally divided …

There’s a Gwynn Page on the 1810 Census in Prince William County, VA. Perhaps this was Samuel’s brother in law mentioned in the suit.

John Pryor Rutherford County TN to KY Fact or Fiction?

Since I just finished looking at the Pryor family and their neighbors who were in early Logan and Christian County, KY, I thought it would be a good idea to look at later Pryors.

Years ago I exchanged emails with a Pryor researcher who was interested in the line of John Pryor who married Rebecca Cook in 1823 in Rutherford County, TN. It was their theory that John and Rebecca were then counted on the 1830 and 1840 Census in Wilson County, TN and that John Pryor had died, Rebecca remarried and was later found in Christian County, KY.

The information on this couple is sketchy beyond their marriage date in 1823. If John on the 1830 census is the man who married in 1823, then what were the ages of the children on the census– do they match the marriage year? It’s hard to tell. There were 2 males ages 5 through 9 which fits with the marriage date. There was also a male 10 through 14. The oldest male (John?) was 20 through 29, a bit too young to be the father of a 14 year old. There were 2 adult women in the household so perhaps one was the mother of sister of this young male.

Researchers seem to be on the right track identifying a Rebecca Pryor in Christian County. She is on the 1860 Census as Rebecca Pryer age 51 in the home of Sarah Pryor Wilson. Sarah died at age 90, unfortunately her death record didn’t name her parents. It just says “D.K.”– don’t know? Sarah was recorded as Sarah Ann C. Pryor when she married, so we know she was a Pryor and Rebecca lived with her, so it’s possible they were mother and daughter.

Also in the Wilson household in 1860 was Zack A. Pryor age 13. Zack is an interesting clue because he leads back to the 1850 Census when a Rebecca age 40 and a Zack age 4 were living in the household of Ab Nixon. I haven’t found a marriage for Ab Nixon–perhaps this was another arrangement. Not only was Rebecca identified as a Pryor on the 1860 census, but also the 1870 Mortality Schedule. Zack may be the Zachariah Pryor buried in Chattanooga, killed during the Civil War.

And I now have the full name of Ab Nixon for folks interested in this line: Absolom Nixon. There’s an estate sale filed in Christian County (Book N, page 692, sale page 693).

Pryor Logan County, KY and the 1807 Estate in Christian County

In an older post I wrote about men named John Pryor Logan Co., KY and Christian County who seem to be connected (Richard and Mourning Pryor: Christian County, KY Tie-In). I looked again at the names in the John Pryor estate filed 1807 in Christian County. If we weren’t sure that the Pryors in Christian County were related to the Pryors in Logan County, then hopefully this Christian County document is a good confirmation of their Logan County residency.

This is an exercise in several project I’m working on that “builds neighborhoods” (looks at Pryor neighbors on early records).  Then looking at maps to see what the geography says. The maps are saying that Christian County, KY existed side by side with Logan County because Todd County was not formed until 1820.

I think what we have in the 1807 estate is a nice way of shedding light on who was living near each other in Logan County and… associating with each other.

So, here are the names on the documents and some information about them.

Robert Sharrard – Robert Sherrod received a land grant in Logan Co. in 1816 and is on the 1810 and 1820 census in Logan Co., KY. He may be the Revolutionary War soldier who filed for a pension in Todd County (next to Logan Co.) In 1790 he was in Edcombe County, NC.

Elizabeth PRIOR: Possibly the Elizabeth Crawford who married a John Pryor in Logan County, KY in 1803. It’s unknown if she married John Sr. or Jr. because there were both a Sr. and Jr. in Logan County. These men were involved in survey of Richard Pryor property in Logan County in 1796. 

John PRYOR: John Jr. or John Sr. who was in Logan Co., KY. 

Elizabeth Henkman (or possibly Kirkman): See Dunlop below.

James PRYER: My theory is that this is the James B. Pryor who was married to a Rebecca (surname unknown) and lived in Christian County, KY; Stewart County, TN; and Pike Co., IL per her obituary.

John Burdine: ?

Obadiah Dewhit (DeWhitt): Obadiah Dewitt on 1800 Tax List Logan Co., KY

John Bayley (Bailey): Mourning Pryor White was counted on page 175 of 1810 Census, Logan County. John Baily is on page 176.

Vinson Layston: ?

Jacob Dalmaldson (possibly Donaldson?): Jacob Dollason (sic) counted on the 1810 Census in Russellville, Logan County on the same page with Robert Sherrod and Abel Crawford (sic)

Hoxa Boren: Hosea Borren was counted on the 1800 Tax list in Logan County, KY.

James Nunn: James Nunn counted on page 183 in Russellville, Logan County

Able Crawford: Abel (sic) was counted on the 1810 Census in Russellville, Logan County on the same page with Robert Sherrod and Jacob Dollason (sic)

Matthias House: Possibly the man by this name who was the father of Revolutionary War pensioner Adam House (see pension application https://revwarapps.org/r5260.pdf). Adam House served under Bohannon. Remember the Bohannons and the Pryors married and lived near each other in White Co., TN.

William Dunlop: William and Benjamin Dunlop are on the 1810 Census in Christian County, KY. On the line above William Dunlop is James Kirkman (see Elizabeth Kirkman above) and on the next page William Kirkman. Benjamin Dunlop received a land grant in Logan County in 1806.

Richard Pryor of Clarksville Nephew of Samuel Morton Gaines

When I read this obit of a Richard Pryor of Clarksville I wondered who he was. Searching for him in Ancestry and through Google didn’t turn over easy answers, but answers I found.

Richard Pryor Dies Suddenly at York, Alabama.
There are many people in Clarksville who will be pained to learn of the death of Richard Pryor, formerly of this city. He died Saturday last at York, Ala., and was buried Sunday. The Pryor family, it will be remembered, lived in Clarksville for several years and were well liked here.

Richard Pryor, by the death of his father, had the care of a family thrown on him when he was a mere boy. He went to work, however, and supported his mother and sisters well. At the time of his death he was a popular paper drummer, travelling for Louis Snider & Sons, of Cincinnati. He was popular with the trade and his death will be very much regretted. He died of an attack of cramp colic.

The Chattanooga Times of Sunday, contained the sad news of the sudden death of Mr. Richard Gaines Pryor, which occurred at York, Ala., on Saturday Oct. 22. Mr. Pryor was for a long time a resident of this city and enjoyed a wide personal acquaintance here. He was a commerical traveler for the well known Cincinnati paper house of Louis Snider’s Sons Co. He made this city on his regular sixty days’ trip just before going south early in October. He was regarded as one of the best paper drummers on the road and commanded a very handsome salary. He was a nephew of Capt. Sam M. Gaines, of Lexington. He was the chief support of a widowed mother and several younger [rest of text missing]

I found this Pryor family on the 1870 Census in KY. If Richard and his mother and siblings lived in Clarksville, TN it was perhaps after 1870.  I found his uncle Samuel Morton Gaines was living in Hopkinsville, Christian County, KY in 1880.

Then I located these Pryors in Charlotte Co., VA in 1860. This location makes sense because I also located the death record for Richard’s uncle, Samuel Morton Gaines– He died in 1928 in Washington, DC and the record states his parents were Richard J. Gaines and Martha W. Venable and he was born 1843 at Charlotte Court House, VA

Remember Richard’s uncle was Samuel Morton Gaines, two Chancery Court Cases help to explain the relationships– Samuel E. Pryor was married to Elizabeth F. Gaines and Samuel Morton Gaines was her brother.

1861 Chancery Court Case – Richard N Venable and the heirs of E W Morton Vs. the Executor of Elizabeth W Morton. One of the heirs was Elizabeth “Betty” Gaines the wife of Samuel Pryor, daughter of Martha W. Gaines, a daughter of Elizabeth W Morton. 1864 Chancery Court Case for the estate of William Gaines includes his daughter Elizabeth F Gaines Pryor and her husband Samuel E. Pryor.

I suspect Richard’s father, Sam E. Pryor, is same the Samuel who was counted in a school on the 1850 Census.

I know, I know… all those gosh-darn Samuel Pryors in Virginia! I have in my notes that Samuel E. Pryor was Samuel Edward Pryor, the son of Samuel Pryor and Mary Ann Withers.

Hope this helps someone searching this line.

** 1867 Samuel M. Gaines married Ada S. Leake in Albemarle Co., VA.
