Burials in Pryor Cemetery, Sumner County TN

I recently looked at the Pryor Cemetery on FindAGrave.com. There are 14 burials or Pryors and Gregorys recorded. They appear to be correctly noted and not phantom graves (people who have no recorded burial but end up in plot on Find A Grave).

My notes from the Sumner County Cemetery Book, state the cemetery is located 2 & 7/10 miles N of Hwy 31E on Rock Bridge Road; then 6/10 mile NW on Pryor Branch Road. Cemetery is on N side of road. Only 6 burials were recorded, perhaps because markers were obscured or no longer existed.

Additional Burials per Other Sources

PRYOR, Thomas Jefferson b. 1845, died May 22, 1912. Son of William Pryor and Margaret Curry. Thomas was the father of Willie Pryor who married Thomas Gregory. Gregory’s first wife was Betty Pryor, a daughter of Allen L. Pryor. It is speculated that William Pryor was Allen’s brother. Obituary of Thomas Pryor states he was buried in the Allen Pryor Cemetery.

GREGORY, Thomas Washington b. 25 Aug 1864 – 25 Sep 1931, son in law of Allen L. Pryor. Johnny Adcock 5 Jan 1895 reported in a first hand account that he helped with the burial of Thomas Gregory in the Pryor cemetery off of Rockbridge Rd.

GREGORY, Vernon Head
b. 16 Dec 1890 – 11 Jun 1909. Son of Thomas Washington Gregory and Betty Pryor. His burial in the family cemetery was reported by his brother Thomas M. Gregory.

PRYOR-GREGORY, Betty b. Jul 1861 – 15 Jan 1909, daughter of Allen L. Pryor. Obituary states she was buried in the family burial plot on the same farm on which she was raised.

Allen L Pryor Cemetery in Sumner County, TN

During the summer of 2016 a Pryor researcher sent me photos of the grave markers in the Pryor Cemetery near Sumner County, TN (near Gallatin). My apologies for being slower than maple syrup in January in getting these posted! I’ve got some photos I took in the 1980’s – I’ll have to see if I can find them. It’s interesting to compare what is known of a cemetery at different times. For instance, there are only 6 burials noted on a Rootsweb page. It’s possible that those were the only markers visible when the survey of the cemetery was done for the book Sumner County, Tennessee Cemetery Records.

Sumner County, TN: Allen L. Pryor Appointed Estate Administrator (1867)

Another nice Pryor record from Sumner County… the court order appointing Allen L. Pryor as the administrator of his mother’s estate. Since his mother’s name is spelled Massey on this legal document, I will be adopting this as the correct spelling of her name (giving up all variations from census records).

Ordered by the Court that Allen L Pryor be appointed administrator of all and singular the goods and chattels, rights and credits of the estate of Massey Pryor, deceased. And thereupon the said Allen L Pryor and William P Guthrie and John B Neill his securities appeared in Open Court entered into and acknowledged their bond to the State of Tennessee in the p—? sum of Five Hundred dollars conditional according to law and said A L Pryor was duly qualified. Allen L. Pryor’s Notebook – A Clue to a Sumner County Pryor

Edward Pryor of Sumner County This little book is a jewel in Pryor family research. It’s the kind of thing that could easily have been swept into the trash when long-ago clearing out a house. It’s also the kind of thing that many of us have tucked away and haven’t thought to share. This is a note book that Allen L. Pryor of Sumner County began to keep in about 1841. Thanks to a cousin I’ve met on Ancestry.com we have an important clue to our Pryors.

In Gallatin Cemetery there’s a cenotaph (not a tombstone, but a monument– no bodies buried there) to Sumner County soldiers who were killed Monterey during the battle of the Mexican War. The monument names Edward Pryor who Allen L’s family has long claimed to be one of Allen’s brothers. Without birth records nor even a Bible entry, we haven’t had much proof of their relationship.

The Battle of Monterey was fought in 1846 (five years after Allen L. Pryor began entries in this book. The monument can be viewed on Find A Grave, which states it was installed in Gallatin in 1850.  There are some notable people buried in Gallatin City Cemetery.

I haven’t been able to find John Pryor, father of Allen L. and probably Edward on the 1820 Census. It’s interesting to know that in about 1850 the family believed  he was born in Sumner County in 1823. That helps to place the family in Sumner County BEFORE the death of John’s father in law, Edmund Taylor, in 1824. It also puts John Pryor in TN about the time his probable brother William Pryor show up on the 1820 Census in Overton County– but still before his Taylor kin migrated to Tennessee after Edmund Taylor’s death.

Allen L. Pryor claimed on census records and in his Goodspeed biography to have been born 1816 in White County, TN. That’s even earlier than we can find this Pryor line in the paper records.
